Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini abdominoplasty is a more limited version of the traditional tummy tuck, focused on addressing loose skin and stubborn fat in the lower abdomen below the belly button, achieved through a shorter scar and faster recovery.

Overview

A mini tummy tuck, or mini abdominoplasty, is a less extensive surgical procedure that addresses loose skin and persistent fatty deposits confined to the area below the belly button. Unlike a full abdominoplasty, only the lower abdomen is treated, the belly button is generally not repositioned and the scar is considerably shorter.

This procedure is best suited to slim patients whose skin laxity and small "pooch" of lower abdominal skin have not responded to diet and exercise, and who do not have significant muscle separation extending above the belly button. A consultation is essential to determine whether a mini or full abdominoplasty is the right approach for you.

Benefits

  • Smoother lower abdomen: Removal of the small pouch of loose skin and fat below the belly button.
  • Shorter scar: The resulting scar is considerably shorter than a full abdominoplasty and sits low below the bikini line.
  • Quicker recovery: A less invasive approach generally means less downtime and a faster return to normal activities compared with a full tummy tuck.
  • Targeted correction: Ideal for slim patients with an isolated area of loose lower abdominal skin that diet and exercise cannot address.
  • Improved clothing fit: A flatter lower abdomen often helps clothing and swimwear to sit more comfortably and flatteringly.
  • Enhanced confidence: Improved self-image and renewed confidence in your silhouette.

Surgical Techniques

A mini abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between 90 and 120 minutes. The precise technique is tailored to your individual anatomy and Mr Singh will discuss the most appropriate approach for you during your consultation.

  • Short low incision: A shorter horizontal incision is placed low on the abdomen, well below the bikini line so the scar can be easily concealed.
  • No umbilical incision: The belly button is usually left in place and not repositioned, unlike a full abdominoplasty.
  • Limited skin and fat removal: Excess skin and fat of the lower abdomen are removed whilst the upper abdominal skin is left undisturbed.
  • Limited muscle repair: If there is mild laxity of the lower rectus abdominis muscles, these can be tightened with internal sutures. Extensive muscle separation above the belly button cannot be treated with a mini procedure.
  • Closure: The incision is closed in layers with dissolving sutures, and dressings are applied. Drains may or may not be used depending on the amount of tissue removed.

Risks & Considerations

General Risks

  • Infection: Risk of wound infection which can delay healing and may require additional treatment.
  • Bleeding: Risk of excessive bleeding during or after surgery, with rare haematoma formation requiring drainage.
  • Scarring: Permanent scar which typically fades over time but will not disappear completely.
  • Blood clots (DVT/PE): As with any contouring surgery, there is a small risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. Stockings, calf pumps and early mobilisation are used to reduce this risk.
  • Anaesthetic risks: As with any surgery requiring general anaesthesia.

Specific Risks to Mini Abdominoplasty

  • Seroma: Collection of fluid beneath the skin flap, which may need to be drained in clinic with a needle.
  • Incomplete correction: Because only the lower abdomen is addressed, laxity or fullness above the belly button will not be improved and may appear more obvious relative to the tightened lower abdomen.
  • Changes in skin sensation: Numbness over the lower abdomen, which usually improves over months but can occasionally be permanent.
  • Dog-ears: Small puckers of skin at the ends of the scar that may occasionally need minor revision.
  • Wound healing problems: Small areas of delayed healing along the scar line, usually settling with regular dressings.
  • Belly button distortion: Rarely, the belly button can be pulled slightly downwards or distorted by the tightening of the lower abdominal skin.

Recovery

Compression Garments

  • Abdominal binder or compression garment: A supportive garment is worn 24/7 for approximately 4 weeks and then during the day for a further period, helping to reduce swelling and support the healing tissues.
  • Posture: A slightly stooped posture for the first several days will take tension off the wound and allow the skin to heal comfortably.

Wound Care

  • Dressings: Keep the dressings in place as directed; these are usually robust enough to allow showering.
  • Drains: Surgical drains are usually placed and remain in until fluid output drops, typically around 1–2 days.
  • Cleaning: Gentle daily showering with mild soap and water is encouraged to reduce the risk of wound infection.

Scar Advice

  • Scar care products: Silicone sheets or gels can be used on the healed wound to help minimise the appearance of the scar.
  • Sun protection: Protect the scar from direct sun exposure for the first 6–8 weeks with sunscreen or clothing.
  • Massage: Gentle scar massage once wounds are fully healed can help to soften and flatten the scar.

Follow-Up

  • Initial Post-Op Visit: Typically scheduled around a week following surgery to check on the healing process. Sutures are usually dissolving for this procedure.
  • Subsequent Visits: Usually seen again 6 weeks following surgery for an early check and around the 3–4 month mark for a longer-term review.
  • Long-Term Care: Mr Singh remains available for any concerns or further follow-up as required.
